Garden Tour in Newton, Mass.
October 1, 2023
Upwards of 20 classmates traveled to Newton on Sunday, October 1, for a tour of two exquisite gardens there: the perennial garden of classmate Deborah Chud and the vegetable and fruit garden of Margaret Primack, wife of classmate Richard Primack. Deborah, a retired physician, has devoted seven years to researching New Perennial gardens such as New York's High Line and Chicago's Lurie Garden and has created the most comprehensive existing database of New Perennial plant combinations. In fall 2020 she presented her work as part of an international event, "Piet Oudolf: How Does He Do It?," under the aegis of gardenmasterclass.org. She has also presented to audiences at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Arnold Arboretum, U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C., Toronto Botanical Garden, and Delaware Botanic Gardens. Margaret's bountiful fruit and vegetable garden, featuring raised beds to repel marauders and a hand-dug well, is also noteworthy for its novel production of mushrooms. Following the tours, Richard and Margaret hosted an informal reception on their deck. Thanks to Richard, Deborah, and Sharon Weinstein for organizing this fun event.
If you were able to attend on October 1, this message from Deborah is for you: "I'd be happy to arrange individual tours for anyone who regrets missing the event." You can reach Deborah at dfchud@gmail.com.
