Peter Sutton
Peter Sutton is an art historian, curator, and museum director.
Peter Sutton has had a long career in Dutch, Flemish, and French art, organizing dozens of exhibitions and writing 28 books and catalogues. His writings include surveys of Dutch genre (1984) and Dutch landscape painting (1987), painting in the Age of Rubens (1992), and monographic studies of Pieter de Hooch, Jan van der Heyden, and Michiel Sweerts. He has served as the director of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford and the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, the curator of European Paintings in the MFA in Boston, and associate curator of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as director of Old Master Paintings at Christie’s in New York.
He is presently working on the catalogue of the collection of Matthew and Susan Weatherbie for the new Center for Netherlandish Art at the MFA in Boston. An expansion of the Bruce Museum that he initiated will open next year, doubled in size
