Peter Galassi
Peter Galassi was a curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art for thirty years.
In 1972–73, Peter Galassi was production manager of the Richmond Mercury, founded by Edmund Reynolds ’72, Garrett Epps ’72, and Frank Rich ’71. In 1974–75, he was an intern in photography at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). His doctoral dissertation at Columbia (1986) was published as Corot in Italy (Yale 1991) Galassi was a curator of photography at MoMA from 1981 to 2011, the last twenty years as chief curator. He organized more than 40 exhibitions, many accompanied by major publications, and under his leadership the photography collection grew significantly. Since leaving MoMA he has organized “Robert Frank in America” (Stanford, 2015) and “In the Studio: Photographs” (Gagosian, 2015), and “Brassaï” (Fundación MAPFRE, Madrid, 2018). An anthology in English of the writings of Swedish critic and curator Ulf Linde (1929–2013), edited and translated by Galassi and his wife, Kerstin Lind Bonnier, will be published in fall 2022.
