These paintings are part of a larger series entitled "Chasm, Canyons, and Corridors." Initially I couldn't quite get why I was so entranced with the vertical format, but one day my wife reminded me that I grew up in New York City. Makes perfect sense.
These three were done shortly after we returned from a trip to Uganda. We were lucky to get it in just before the lockdown. The African landscape—the savannahs, mountains, and jungles, along with the amazing animals, had a profound impact on my color palette. And really, color is the major mover in my work. It is the master and creator of mood, association, and drama.
While I always start out with a pretty clear idea of where I want to go with each painting, the material quickly asserts itself and demands negotiations. The result is always a bit of a surprise.
